EXCLUSIVE: Sevyn Streeter Talks "On The Verge," Inspirations & More

Sevyn Streeter is a girl on fire. The 28-year-old singer-songwriter from Florida has proved she's a hit-maker by writing chart topping tracks for Chris Brown, Ariana Grande and more but now it's her turn to shine. With a hot new single "Don't Kill The Fun" featuring Chris Brown and a nationwide "Sevyn In The City" promo tour, we know Sevyn is a rising star. That's why we chose Sevyn as April's Artist of the Month.

In an exclusive interview while on a promotional tour in Boston, Sevyn talked music, her favorite tracks and how she got to where she is now exclusively with Roman's Rap-Up.

"It's been a really crazy, amazing journey to be honest. I've been in two groups...and it was great. It's led me to where I am now," she said. Sevyn was signed to both Jive and Interscope with those groups before meeting Chris Brown and signing with new management.

During the course of her career, she's written many hit songs for some of the hottest artists. Some of her favorites include "The Way" by Ariana Grande and "Next To You" by Justin Bieber and Chris Brown. She now has her own single out titled "Don't Kill The Fun". She's also featured on the "Fast and Furious Seven" soundtrack.

"The beat alone is kind of like a mixture of 90s house music. I'm from the south so I need my bass. We just wanted it to be really, kinda, positive and remind people not to kill the fun in their jobs, in their lives, in their relationships," she said. "Chris [Brown] had this idea for the video. Exactly how he explained it is exactly how it turned out and I couldn't be more excited about it."

Sevyn's debut LP is due out in 2015 and it is eagerly anticipated by her many fans. "'On The Verge' is just my baby...and I can't wait for you guys to hear it!" she explained. "I'm on the verge of this really cool journey with my fans. The album is all over the place...but in a good way. It's grounded and rooted because I'm a Southern girl who grew up on urban music but it's also got pop and R&B. So I didn't put myself in a box."

"On The Verge" features some heavy hitters including August Alsina, Chris Brown and Ty Dolla $ign and Sevyn seems extremely pleased with how it all came together. "I think that this album will allow people to get a better sense of who I am. To not put me in a box...to just accept me and my music as a whole. I think it'll allow people to understand that all these different types of records are genuinely who I am, for real. I wrote not thinking about genres. I just wrote thinking how I felt that day, you know what I mean?" she explained, talking about what she hopes people will get out of her album. It's easy to see she's not a one-dimensional artist. She's unique and she draws inspiration from many other artists including Janet Jackson and Beyonce.

In addition to writing, recording and touring, Sevyn also likes to give back. She posted a message on Instagram, inviting all of her fans to do something positive in their communities with the chance to meet her if they joined her social media campaign. When she has the time, Sevyn visits schools and talks to the kids about music and creativity in general.

"I really enjoy going to high schools and middle schools and Boys and Girls Clubs. Kids have all kinds of questions and sometimes they don't have anyone to talk to about it. Thye're so creative and have all these bright ideas and I love to talk to them because I was once the kid in school who wanted to sing and I love to give advice to them," she said. "I tell them all the time to start where you are. Become the biggest thing in your city or town. Link up with other writers and producers in your area."

Album Review: Chris Brown & Tyga Strike Balance in Joint "Fan Of A Fan" Project

(RCA Records)

Chris Brown and Tyga joined forces on Breezy's Between The Sheets tour and now they're joining forces again on their joint album "Fan Of A Fan." The album is appealing to fans of both artists with Brown's smooth vocals sustaining the album throughout. Tracks like "Nothin Like Me" and "Ayo" are tracks that could easily get mainstream airplay (with "Ayo" currently on radio-repeat). It's not surprising that the album features guest spots from artists such as Fifty Cent on "I Bet," where he drops a few verses to up the ante.  Most of the tracks are higher energy but there are a couple slower ones. "Better," which is a Tyga led track, and "Lights Out" are two of those. Despite being a little slower, the beat is still catchy, making them worth a listen. The album transitions smoothly from track to track, making it an easy listening experience. There's no need to skip tracks because they're awful or boring. "Fan Of A Fan" is one of those albums that is definitely worth adding to your library. It's a collaboration between two hard-hitting artists that shows off both of their talents equally and proves that whether you love or hate Chris Brown, there's no denying he's one of the best in the industry.

"Fan Of A Fan" is out February 24th on iTunes and retailers worldwide.

Big Sean Gets Emotional in New Song from "Dark Sky Paradise"

(Def Jam)

With Big Sean's "Dark Sky Paradise" slated to be released on February 24th, his new single "One Man Can Change the World" featuring Kanye West and John Legend (who each take a turn singing the chorus) is destined to be a chart topper. It's an emotional single that is reflective of Big Sean's relationship with his deceased grandmother. The song features a smooth piano beat that is both relaxing and yet holds your attention throughout thanks to Sean's vocal abilities. Big Sean reflects on his grandmother, life and the lessons and advice he has received along the way on each verse, making clear the impact the woman had on his life. One specific piece that sticks out from the rest of the track is the fact Sean uses real recordings of his grandmother saying goodbye. It's rare to find such an emotionally charged song especially nowadays when many of them similar the same or focuses on the same subjects. "One Man Can Change The World " is definitely worth a listen whether you're a hip hop fan or not.
