Tink Goes Hard in "Circle The Block" Video

Nicki Minaj's protege appears as Tink, a bad ass female rapper who dropped her music video for "Circle the Block" earlier today. Much like Minaj, Tink's verses are tight and quick, laying on lyric after lyric as the rapper stands against cars and other dark backgrounds to bring an intense vibe to the video. Her dancers range in look; some adorning the long braids that fashion icons such as Khloe Kardashian has recently incorporated into her wardrobe. The entire set of the video leans towards darker colors that make a nighttime mood prevalent in the video. Tink's talent is unarguable; her swagger is evident. "Circle the Block" embodies Tink's artistic spirit in a video and song that suits the artist.

New Music From Ariana Grande, Iggy Azalea, Kygo, & Zayn Malik

This past week has been filled with hot singles dropped by some of the industry’s brightest stars. ZAYN, who left One Direction behind in 2015, has been on fire with his first solo album, dropping “LIKE I WOULD” this past week. Though the song is quicker than “PILLOWTALK”’s sensual, slow rhythm, its energy demonstrates another side to the solo artist as he steps out of the shadow of One Direction. ZAYN has always been evidently talented, but his release of the singles from his upcoming album, “Mind of Mine,” coming out March 25th has validated his talent to awaiting fans. In addition, ZAYN has released two other singles, “BeFoUr” and and “iT’s YoU” that do not carry the punch that “PILLOWTALK” or “LIKE I WOULD” do, but they are still heavy contenders in demonstrating ZAYN’s new pop artistic identity.

Another recently single lighting the charts on fire is Ariana Grande’s “Dangerous Woman.” This single carries the same name as the title of her new album, dropping mid-May. The vibe of the song is extremely sexual and slow, creating a more mature image to the young artist as she breaks into her newest album since “My Everything” from 2014 when her star originally exploded. The single is the perfect demonstration of her growth and maturity since “Problem” and “Love Me Harder,” two hits from her original album that carry a more pop-typical feeling. “Dangerous Woman” unveils Grande’s voice as a powerful, dangerous seductress. She has also released “Be Alright” that holds a beat good for an upbeat shopping venture or jog. It is enjoyably lighthearted and fun in contrast to “Dangerous Woman.”

Kygo also released a new single, “Fragile,” today. It is slow and includes many unique backbeats that compliment that pop/R&B genre that “Fragile” falls into. Kygo’s beautiful vocal range is shown off in the song, as well; he hits the high notes that many male singers cannot reach, which adds a level of talent to Kygo’s resume. The song is relative to what listeners hear from bands like OneRepublic.

Iggy Azalea dropped “Team;” she also is building her next album since releasing music around the time of Ariana Grande’s last musical climax. The song’s sound is similar to the Iggy listeners hear in “Black Widow.” Her unique rap tone in combination with a pop chorus is typical to the hip-hop artist’s repertoire. “Team” is a catchy tune that could easily land a common listen on the radio, but it does not have much depth to climb out of the box of Iggy’s music that first landed her a rising star a few years ago.

MTV Woodies Lights Up SXSW With Upcoming Musicians

Jidenna performing at the 2016 MTV Woodies Festival on March 16th, 2016 (MTV).

A$AP Rocky’s black-and-white introduction to the MTV Live Stream of The Woodies music festival discussed the inspiration and unique qualities desired in the industry. He is hosting the live stream and explains that defining yourself, as an artist, is what is important no matter what others define you as.

A$AP Rocky also stepped onto the stage to introduce the viewers and concertgoers to the first act of the night. “We are celebrating artists that you discovered pushing boundaries and making the music you love,” A$AP Rocky said. The festival took place in Austin, TX and began with A$AP Ferg.

The lightening turned to red as he sprung onto the stage on a tall stage that projected pouring rain on its surfaces. A$AP Ferg brought up the energy in the crowd, as it begun with a rap act. He eventually left the tall stage and rapped from the normal main stage, grey hoodie hanging on his head. His song had a repetitive chorus easy to pick up, “I’m on a new level.” This phrase was literally represented with his change in level between the two platforms, causing a neat performance effect.

After the first performance, MTV showed a mix of clips of rising artists who discussed their music and what inspires them. Jack Antonoff explained that one of his inspirations is Fleetwood Mac. The entire show was about discovering new artists and celebrating their differences, so the montage fit well with the vibe.

Anderson Paak and the Free Nationals were the next performance. They led with a very Michael-Jackson vibe with super lighthearted beats and funky rap. There was a slight similarity to Bruno Mars’s style that leans towards the 80’s, as well, which created a generally fun vibe. Anderson Paak’s outfit fit his musical style; his jacket was extremely colorful and pattern-filled. The performance also directly referenced the passing of David Bowie with a melodical rendition of “Let’s Dance,” that had the crowd smiling.

A$AP Rocky introduced Erin Paul as one of the “dopest actors on TV.” Erin Paul then introduced the next act, Jack Garratt. He was the first artist that was not in the hip-hop/rap genre. His song was slow and intense with blue lighting to compliment the tone. Garratt’s genre could be considered a version of rock; the grit in his voice filled the stadium with loud clarity, and Garratt played multiple instruments while presumably using a loop pedal. Anderson Paak featured in Garratt’s song, adding a smooth rap tone to the intense performance. Garratt’s guitar skills stole the show, as he closed the performance with a phenomenal solo.

MTV then showed clips from earlier in the day at the festival from artists like Kehlani and Lukas Graham. It allowed the viewers at home to see a further range of the talent than what is simply shown on the hour live stream. Jidenna also performed “Classic Man” earlier in the day, and the viewers were able to hear the radio hit through the clips shown from the daytime part of the festival.

Kehlani took the stage next for her night performance, adorning a black mini dress and joined by two backup dancers. Her artistic style leaned towards sensual, R&B that created hot dance music that contrasted from all the previous performances.

CHVRCHES was the next performance. This festival came around six months after their stellar performance at Boston Calling Music Festival in fall 2015. Her airy voice creates a unique tone for the band, which makes them easy to pick from the crowd, literally and metaphorically. Electronic beats are similar to The Chainsmokers in their artistic tone and performance.

Pusha T introduced the main act of the night, The Chainsmokers, who performed their hit “Rozes.” Fog machines exploded during the bass drop in the song, and the entire crowd evidently looked forward most to this performance. As the performance ended, confetti flew through the crowd. It was an epic ending to the festival, particularly with Lamar introducing the main act.

Catch up on all the performances here.

DJ Khaled: The Brilliance Behind The Beard

DJ Khaled with Snoop Dogg at Real 92.3's Birthday Bash at The Forum in February, 2016 (Gibson Dintersmith/Roman's Rap-Up).

DJ Khaled is arguably one of the biggest breakout sensations of the past year in the music industry. Ironically, it isn’t because of his music. DJ Khaled, well known for his hit “All I Do Is Win,” has made headlines due to his… well… ‘unique’ Snapchat stories. The rapper and record producer has coined pop culture phrase after phrase due to these stories that have spiked in popularity with the current, young generation of Snapchat users. More recently, Khaled has been in the studio with rap mega-sharks such as Future in the production of his new album EVOL. Besides producing, DJ Khaled has made a name for himself as a social media personality, making appearances with famous artists such as Snoop Dogg. “Another one,” “major key,” and “We da best” are a few of the phrases that have become part of the 2016 pop culture language due to DJ Khaled’s goofy stories and repetitive usage in order to inspire his followers. In most of the videos, DJ Khaled seems somewhat out of it, babbling on with half-winded sentences that seem to fall short of the dramatic inspiration that he tries to attain. His focus is on money and success, like most producing tycoons, but it is difficult to take the DJ seriously. Is his success stemming from a chuckled mockery that attracts followers or is there a motive behind the entertainment that truly makes DJ Khaled a major key?

Recently on the Ellen Degeneres Show, DJ Khaled sat down with Ellen to discuss his career. When she asked exactly what he does, he answered, “I’m a music mogul, I’m a producer, I’m DJ, I’m an executive, I’m a CEO, and I’m an artist.” DJ Khaled dressed in a brown jumpsuit and did not shy away from the bling, adorning tons of gold chains and rings that showed off his shiny success. The platinum-selling artist is never short of overflowing with things to say, some that seems practical and some that makes one tilt a head in slight confusion. Ellen represented that part of the community following the DJ Khaled, lighthearted asking the mogul, “Now Khaled, you talk about ‘they’ a lot. Who is ‘they?’” *Laughs from the audience* As a viewer, the expectation was for another long-winded Khaled response mixed with philosophical terms and low key motivation. Instead, he answered in a manner that pretty brilliantly matches why he is so successful: “Stay away from ‘they.’ ‘They’ is the people who told you you’d never have The Ellen Show. ‘They’ is that one person in the corner when you get a raise, that one person who says, ‘Man, I hate that person.’ ‘They’ are the people that don’t believe in you. We stay away from ‘they.’”

Mock him all you want. Mock his mantras, his party stories, his business, his ‘inspo’ speeches. DJ Khaled isn’t simply a good-time guy, and he sure isn’t stupid. As Ellen, one of the bright stars on television whose career is based on positive energy, declared she enjoys DJ Khaled because he focuses his energy on the bright side, too. He layers metaphor on top of metaphor during speeches, but at the end, the audience gets it. Snapchat is a beautiful tool for the entrepreneur because it allows him to shoot his ideas out to a wide audience repeatedly as he desires. His major key to success is the manipulation of social media bases to spread his positivity. Those who use the popular forms of communication to their advantage instead of allowing it to harm their reputation are who shoulder up in the industry. People might say he’s one donut short of a dozen. What DJ Khaled would probably say to that? Hey baker… another one.

Most artists release an album, and immediately go on tour in support of that album. Tinashe, however, has chosen to do things differently. Bringing her "Joyride World Tour" to Boston on Wednesday night, the "2 On" singer is touring to support her yet-to-be-released album by the same name. New album or not, the thousand screaming fans in attendance didn't care, belting out every word to her hits "All Hands on Deck," "Party Favors," and more.
